Prosecutors said Thursday that Ben O'Driscoll is accused of authorizing payments of at least 5,000 pounds (nearly ê8,000) to officials including police officers and employees at Broadmore, a high-security hospital, in return for tips.
Many of O'Driscoll current and former Sun colleagues - including some of the newspaper's most senior staff - have also been charged with corruption-related offenses.
About a dozen reporters and editors are due to be tried on various counts, including the paper's former editor-in-chief, Rebekah Brooks.
