Last November, Benghazi's police chief was assassinated in a drive-by shooting.

Benghazi has been in a constant state of turmoil since the end of the revolution with armed militias holding sway giving rise to popular demonstrations against the militias following the attack on the American consulate and  the deathof the US ambassador Christopher Stevens and 3 US  diplomatic staff.

As the seat of the rebellion against Gaddafi and a centre for calls for federalism Benghazi has been a law unto itself. central government is attempting to assert control. There have been many assasinations of Gaddafi era officials still in office and speculation continuesabout whois responsible for the attacks.
