Seven students were killed and 28 wounded Friday after a gas explosion in a dormitory of Tlemcen, 520 km southwest of Algiers, according to the local director of health, correcting an initial report of 40 injuries.

The explosion occurred in a restaurant in the city while students were having dinner, the source quoted by  APS.

According to the director of academic works of Tlemcen Rezgui Abderrahmane, the explosion was due to accumulation of gas in the basement of the restaurant, following a leak.

The campus at  Bakhti Abdelmadjid where the accident occurred is considered outdated. A previous review had reported seven killed and over 40 injured.

Gas explosions are common in the Maghreb. There have been regular  complaints and demonstrations about the inadequacy of student accommodation and facilities .
