Montevideo - Speaker of the House of Advisors (upper house), Hakim Benchamach, represented His Majesty King Mohammed VI on Sunday in Montevideo at the official inauguration ceremony of the new president of Uruguay, Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou. On this occasion, Benchamach was received at the Estévez Palacio by President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou.
The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of several leaders and heads of state, including King Felipe VI of Spain, Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, Chilean president Sebastián Piñera and Colombian president Iván Duque. Pou, a 46-year old lawyer, has the support of five centre-right parties, including his National Party, as well as a majority in Congress.
His coalition wants to cut government spending and liberalise the energy sector, in order to tackle the country's fiscal deficit.
